When does a tooth need to come out right away?

Many teeth that hurt can be saved. A tooth usually needs an emergency extraction when it is too damaged, too loose, or too infected to repair in a way that will last. Common reasons include:

  • A tooth broken below the gum line. When a crack runs down into the root or the tooth snaps off at the gum, there is often nothing solid left to hold a filling or crown.
  • A severe infection or abscess. Deep decay can let bacteria reach the nerve and the bone. If the tooth cannot be treated with a root canal, removing it takes away the source of the infection.
  • A very loose tooth. Advanced gum disease or an injury can leave a tooth with too little bone support to keep.
  • A painful wisdom tooth. A wisdom tooth that is stuck, infected, or pushing on the tooth next to it is one of the most common same-day extractions we see.

Your dentist makes that call with an exam and X-rays, which show the root and bone you cannot see in the mirror.

Can the tooth be saved instead of pulled?

Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Keeping your own tooth is usually the best long-term result, but it is not always possible. Here is how the two paths compare:

Saving the toothEmergency extraction
Typical treatmentFilling, root canal, and often a crownSimple or surgical removal of the tooth
VisitsOften two or moreUsually one visit for the extraction itself
Upfront costHigherLower: $150 to $300 simple, $250 to $650 surgical at Bleu Dentistry
Long-termYou keep your natural toothThe space may need an implant, bridge, or partial later
Best whenEnough healthy tooth and root remainThe tooth is broken below the gum, very loose, or cannot be treated

Your dentist walks you through both options, and the choice is yours.

What happens at a same-day extraction visit?

  1. Check-in. Walk in or book online. Bring a photo ID, a list of your medications, and your insurance card if you have one.
  2. Exam and X-rays. Your dentist looks at the tooth, takes X-rays, and explains what is going on and what your options are.
  3. Written price. Before anything is done, you see what the treatment costs. No surprises at checkout.
  4. Numbing. The area is fully numbed with local anesthesia. You may feel pressure, but you should not feel sharp pain. Nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation are available if you feel nervous, and there is no need to go elsewhere for IV sedation: it is all done at our office by an anesthesiologist.
  5. The extraction. A simple extraction loosens and lifts out a tooth that is fully visible. A surgical extraction is used when the tooth is broken at the gum line or still under the gum, and may need a small incision and a few stitches.
  6. Aftercare. You leave with gauze and written instructions.

How much does an emergency tooth extraction cost in Dallas?

A lot of people search for a "$99 extraction." At Bleu Dentistry, $99 is the price of the emergency new-patient exam, and it includes X-rays. The extraction is a separate fee. Here is the full picture:

StepPrice at Bleu DentistryWhat it covers
Emergency new-patient exam$99, X-rays includedExam, X-rays, diagnosis, and a written treatment plan
Simple extraction$150 to $300 per toothA tooth that is fully above the gum and comes out in one piece
Surgical extraction$250 to $650 per toothBroken, impacted, or hard-to-reach teeth

Where your tooth falls in those ranges depends on its position and roots, and you see the exact number before treatment starts. For a detailed breakdown, read our guide to tooth extraction cost without insurance in Dallas.

Can I get an emergency extraction without insurance?

Yes. Many of our emergency patients have no dental insurance and pay directly, and the prices above are what they pay. If you do have insurance, Bleu Dentistry is out of network with PPO plans, and our team can check your out-of-network benefits and file the claim for you. Flexible financing is available; our dental financing page explains how payment plans work.

What if the tooth is infected or my face is swollen?

Infection changes the plan, not the goal. Many infected teeth can be removed at the first visit, and taking the tooth out often removes the source of the problem. When swelling is significant, your dentist may first drain the area or prescribe medicine and remove the tooth once things settle. Our guide to dental abscess warning signs explains what to watch for.

Some symptoms need the emergency room first: swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck, a high fever, or any trouble breathing or swallowing. Go to the ER right away for those, then see a dentist to treat the tooth.

Bleu Dentistry is open Monday and Wednesday 10 AM to 7 PM, Friday 3 PM to 7 PM, and Saturday 10 AM to 8 PM. Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday we are closed, but online booking stays open around the clock, so you can grab the next opening any time. What should I do after the tooth is pulled?

The first 24 to 48 hours matter most, while a blood clot forms and protects the socket.

  • Bite on gauze for the time your dentist recommends to help the clot form.
  • Skip straws, smoking, and hard spitting for several days. Suction can pull the clot loose and cause a painful dry socket.
  • Eat soft, cool foods and chew on the other side.
  • Use pain relievers as directed by your dentist, and use an ice pack on the cheek for swelling during the first day.
  • Call us if pain gets worse after the third day, you notice a bad taste or smell, or bleeding does not slow down.

Should I replace the tooth later?

Replacing most teeth helps you chew and keeps nearby teeth from drifting. A dental implant is the closest thing to a natural tooth. If you think you might want one, ask about a bone graft at the time of extraction, which keeps the bone ready for an implant later.
