What Is IV Sedation at the Dentist, and Is It Right for Me?
How IV sedation works, who it helps, how to prepare, and what recovery looks like, with an anesthesiologist right in our office.
IV sedation is a deeper form of dental sedation given through a small IV in your arm or hand. You stay relaxed and drowsy, and many patients remember little of the visit. At Bleu Dentistry in Dallas, there is no need to go elsewhere for IV sedation: it is all done at our office by an anesthesiologist.

What is IV sedation at the dentist?
IV sedation, sometimes called sedation dentistry or twilight sedation, uses medicine delivered directly into a vein. Because it goes straight into the bloodstream, it works within minutes and can be adjusted during the procedure. That control is the main difference from sedation you swallow as a pill.
At Bleu Dentistry, IV sedation is given by an anesthesiologist who is with you from start to finish. The anesthesiologist manages your sedation and monitors you the whole time, so your dentist can focus fully on your treatment. You do not need a referral to a hospital or a separate surgery center.
How is IV sedation different from other options?
| Option | How it is given | How you feel | Drive home? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local anesthesia | Numbing injection at the tooth | Awake, area is numb | Yes |
| Nitrous oxide | Breathed through a small nose mask | Relaxed, wears off in minutes | Usually yes |
| Oral conscious sedation | Prescription pill before the visit | Deeply relaxed, awake | No, you need a ride |
| IV sedation | Small IV, managed by an anesthesiologist in our office | Drowsy, often little memory of the visit | No, you need a ride |
Most dental care needs only local anesthesia, and many nervous patients do well with nitrous oxide or oral sedation. Our guide How Can I Get Dental Care If I'm Afraid of the Dentist? covers those lighter options in detail. IV sedation is for when you want, or need, a deeper level of comfort.
Who is IV sedation a good fit for?
- Strong dental anxiety. If fear has kept you away for years, IV sedation can make it possible to get care done calmly.
- A strong gag reflex. Deep relaxation makes impressions, X-rays, and back-tooth work much easier.
- Bigger procedures. Several extractions, impacted wisdom teeth removal, or dental implant surgery.
- Getting more done in one visit. Patients who need several treatments sometimes prefer one longer, sedated appointment over many short ones.
- Trouble getting numb. Some people need more time and comfort for local anesthesia to work well.
IV sedation is not for everyone. Certain health conditions, medications, and pregnancy can change what is safe. Your full medical history is reviewed before any sedation is planned, and lighter options are always available.
Is IV sedation safe?
When it is given by a trained provider with the right monitoring, IV sedation is a well-established and widely used part of dental care. During your procedure the anesthesiologist watches your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen level continuously, and can adjust the medicine at any moment. That is the reason we have an anesthesiologist provide it, rather than asking you to go elsewhere.
Before your visit, be honest and complete about your health: medical conditions, every medication and supplement you take, allergies, and any past reactions to anesthesia. That information is what keeps sedation safe.
No need to go elsewhere for IV sedation: it is all done at our office by an anesthesiologist.

What should I expect on the day?
Before. You get written instructions ahead of time, including when to stop eating and drinking and what to do about your usual medications. Follow them exactly. Wear comfortable clothes with sleeves that roll up easily, and leave jewelry at home.
During. The anesthesiologist places a small IV, usually in the arm or the back of the hand. Most people feel only a quick pinch. Within minutes you feel heavy, calm, and sleepy. Your dentist then numbs the area and does the treatment while you rest.
After. You stay with us until you are steady and alert enough to leave with your driver. Most people feel groggy for several hours. Plan on resting at home for the rest of the day, with an adult staying with you.
Can I drive or go back to work after IV sedation?
No. You must have a responsible adult drive you home, and you should not drive, work, use machinery, drink alcohol, or sign important documents until the next day. Most patients feel back to normal by the following morning. Recovery from the dental treatment itself depends on what was done, and your dentist gives you aftercare instructions for that part.
How much does IV sedation cost, and does insurance cover it?
IV sedation is priced separately from the dental treatment, and the fee depends mainly on how long the procedure takes. You get a written quote that shows the sedation and the treatment as separate lines before your appointment. Dental insurance coverage for sedation varies by plan; some plans cover it for certain surgical procedures. Our team checks your benefits, and flexible financing is available through our dental financing options.
