Typical Timelines
Most Invisalign cases fall somewhere around 12–18 months. Minor corrections — slight crowding, small relapse after previous orthodontics — can finish in as little as six months. Complex cases involving significant bite correction can run beyond 18 months.
You'll typically get a projected timeline at your consultation, because the digital treatment plan maps every tooth movement before you start.
The Factor You Control
Wear time is the single biggest variable. Aligners are meant to be in your mouth 20–22 hours a day, out only for eating, drinking anything besides water, and brushing.
Patients who follow that finish close to their projection. Patients who leave trays out for hours — through long meals, at work, overnight by accident — find teeth don't track as planned. Then trays stop fitting properly, and the case needs refinement scans and extra aligners. That's how a 12-month plan becomes 20.
What Else Affects the Timeline
- How much movement is needed. Rotating a stubborn tooth or closing a large gap simply takes more stages.
- Age. Teeth in younger patients often move somewhat more readily.
- Attachments. Small tooth-colored bumps bonded to certain teeth give aligners grip for difficult movements — they add precision, not delay.
- Refinements. Many cases include a short round of refinement aligners at the end to perfect the result. This is normal, not a setback.
Don't Skip Retainers
Teeth drift back toward their original positions — this is well documented and it's why retainers exist. After treatment you'll wear retainers, typically full-time briefly and then nightly long-term. Patients who abandon retainers often need treatment again years later, which is a genuinely avoidable expense.
